Beach Read Wednesday! Good Girls Don't by Victoria Dahl (Donovan Brothers #1)

Book cover of Good Girls Don't by Victoria Dahl (contemporary romance novel review)
Final Beach Read Wednesday of the summer!  Today’s pick is a steamy, sexy contemporary read with a light mystery and a good dose of humor thrown in – Good Girls Don’t from Victoria Dahl.  It’s the first book in Dahl’s newest trilogy about the Donovan Brothers Brewery in Boulder, Colorado, and the three siblings who run it.

Goodreads summary: With her long ponytail and sparkling green eyes, Tessa Donovan looks more like the girl next door than a businesswoman—or a heartbreaker. Which may explain why Detective Luke Asher barely notices her when he arrives to investigate a break–in at her family's brewery. He's got his own problems—starting with the fact that his partner, Simone, is pregnant and everyone thinks he's the father.

Tessa has her hands full, too. Her brother's playboy ways may be threatening the business, and the tension could tear her tight–knit family apart. In fact, the only thing that could unite the Donovan boys is seeing a man come after their "baby" sister. Especially a man like Luke Asher. But Tessa sees past the rumors to the man beneath. He's not who people think he is—and neither is she.

My thoughts: I loved Good Girls Don't.  Victoria Dahl does contemporary so well, and this book is example of why.  The Twitter references and microbrew culture are definitely characteristic of 2011 zeitgeist, and the heroine is a savvy businesswoman who helps run a successful business in an industry that’s pretty male-dominated.  Plus the Boulder setting was vibrant and fun, and the city’s culture came through strongly.

As for the romance, it’s sweet and hot at the same time.  Luke and Tessa were both likable characters (Tessa was especially fun), and their chemistry practically lit up the pages.  Be warned, though, that Dahl’s sex scenes aren’t for the faint of heart!  You may need some cool-off time in the pool/ocean/lake after reading them.

Photo of craft beer in a tall glassThe funny byplay between Tessa and her brothers kept everything moving quickly, and the lie that Jamie tells Luke to keep him away from Tessa is particularly hilarious.  Dahl has set up the rest of the trilogy really well – Jamie’s book (Bad Boys Do) comes out Sep. 27 and Eric’s story (Real Men Will) will be published Oct. 25.  Dahl’s already set up Eric’s romance and I have a feeling it’s going to be excellent.

Recommended drink while reading Good Girls Don’t:  A craft beer, naturally!  My pick would be a Gumball Head from Three Floyds Brewing in Indiana.  If I knew a great Colorado brew, I’d suggest that but other than Fat Tire, my knowledge is sadly lacking.

Other Books in This Series: Bad Boys Do, Real Men Will
