Book Review: Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue by Stephanie Laurens (Cynster Sisters #1)

Book cover of Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue by Stephanie Laurens
Fans of Stephanie Laurens' Cynster series will be thrilled to learn that beginning in August, Laurens will begin publishing an all-new trio of books, The Cynster Brides.  With a mysterious Scottish laird calling the shots in a plot to harm the Cynster family, these books introduce a new round of intrigue and romance for the powerful clan. Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue (published August 30) is the 17th book in the Cynster series, and Laurens’ fans will not be disappointed in her ability to craft ‘Regency-Era historicals’ that go far beyond the standard drawing room romance.

Goodreads summary: Determined to hunt down her very own hero, one who will sweep her off her feet and into wedded bliss, and despairing of finding him in London's staid ballrooms, Heather Cynster steps out of her safe world and boldly attends a racy soirée.

But her promising hunt is ruined by the supremely interfering Viscount Breckenridge, who whisks her out of scandal-and straight into danger when a mysterious enemy seizes her, bundles her into a coach, and conveys her out of London.

Now it's up to the notorious Breckenridge to prove himself the hero she's been searching for all along…

My thoughts: This was my first Cynster family novel and I’m impressed with Laurens’ creation of an extended family that is respected for its position in the ton while still unafraid to buck social trends.  The Cynster men and women are renowned not only for their strong wills (collective and individual) but for their determination to marry only for love.  In both these respects, Heather is no different from her relatives.  She is single-minded in her determination to find out who wants to hurt her family – and to make sure that Breckenridge is truly the man for her.

The book begins as a 19th-century road-trip romance but ends up as a contest of wills between a hero and heroine both afraid to reveal their true feelings.  Heather and Breckenridge are both well-developed characters with strong personalities, and I found myself wanting to shake them both until they got over their preconceptions about marriage.

The secondary characters are particularly interesting – I can’t wait to go back and read Richard and Catriona’s story in one of Laurens’ previous books – and the plot moves along quickly.  With all the travel through England and Scotland, I feel like I got a quick lesson in geography.

The love scenes are a bit heavy on the flowery prose – “Forcing open her suddenly heavy lids, she peeked down, watched as, having paid homage to the curve of her shoulder, he caught the ribbon tie with his teeth, tugged until the tiny bow unraveled…” – but Laurens’ legions of fans have always appreciated her style and have made her one of the most popular authors of Regency romance.  Those fans will be thrilled with this new Cynster family book, and new readers (like yours truly) will undoubtedly be intrigued enough to read some of the previous books in the series.
